The Devil’s whirlwind. The hauting and windy legend in the heart of Florence

Last night, Florence was literally enveloped by strong gale force winds, so strong as to almost give a feeling of fear. Who knows if this event, was the work of the angry devil of Via dello Studio. Have you ever heard of the legend of the devil’s whirlwind?

There are many stories and mysteries connected to the town of Florence, and the story I will tell you, which has been handed down for centuries, says nothing less than a furious devil, who roams the streets of the historic centre.

The legend of the Devil’s whirlwind

It is said that the devil in question, wanted to take possession of the soul of a religious man, and for this reason, ran after him through the alleys and streets of the town to get to him. The priest, for his part, tried in every way to escape his sad fate, attempting to lose him.

The chase proved to be long and exhausting, to such an extent that the now tired religious man, was forced to stop when he reached the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

Arrived in the presence of satan, the priest begged him to give him one last wish, before handing over his soul and condemning himself to eternal damnation. His greatest sorrow was that he could no longer pray, so he wanted to turn to God for the last time.

Satan agreed to the priest’s request, allowing him to enter the Cathedral. The two agreed that lucifer would wait in front of the Canon’s Gate for the priest’s return. In reality, the agreement was nothing more than a clever and astute ploy by the clergyman. In fact, once inside the cathedral, he took the opportunity to escape from the opposite side, exiting through one of the many doors.

Meanwhile outside the cathedral, time passed, and the demon began to sniffle and grow impatient with the long wait. Once the mockery was discovered, the priest was long gone. The furious devil stormed through the alleyways, breathing, huffing and puffing so loudly that in his rage he himself turned into a whirlwind.

It is said that to this day the devil continues to seek out the priest, roaming through the streets of the town centre in the form of a whirlwind. Its presence is known and proven by the Florentines. Stopping in Via dello Studio, on the Duomo side, you will indeed feel a sudden and anomalous wind. This inexplicable phenomenon is constantly present in that specific spot, and manifests itself in every season of the year, taking on the power of a tramontana (north wind) in the cold seasons.

Some attribute this singular manifestation to a special atmospheric condition caused by the conjunction of different cold air currents. We Florentines, on the other hand, like to think that it is the demonic presence referred to in the legend, and that we all know as “the devil’s whirlwind“!
