Erano i ruggenti anni venti.

Negroni Cocktail, the most famous Italian drink in the world
Let’s talk about serious things: drinking. Indeed, good drinking! Today’s topic is dedicated to the Negroni cocktail.
Irony apart, it must be said that for us Tuscans, every time a product and/or creation originating from our region travels the world for its fame, it brings out a certain bellicose pride. The weekend is just around the corner, and the theme is perfect.
For those who still do not know, besides being the most famous Italian cocktail in the world, the Negroni was born in Tuscany and to be exact, in Florence.
The extraordinary mixology makes this elegant and inimitable alcoholic aperitif, extremely current and in step with the times, consecrating it still today as a successful cocktail. It seems incredible that Negroni cocktail has been keeping its original composition for more than 100 years.
The 1920s and the situation in Florence and the world
But how was the Negroni cocktail born? It was the roaring twenties. Italy was going through a swinging historical moment full of contrasts. Between radiant optimism and desire for rebirth after the end of the Great War, there was the awareness of an uncertain future and anything but smooth. The hesitant global situation, would then lead to a world crisis, first with the historic collapse of the Wall Street stock exchange in 1929, and later resulted in the terrible Second World War.
Florence, which at the time was one of the bases of fascism. It had an incredible demographic increase, with an important growth in trade, tourism, industry and finance. Although the period was gloomy, the Florentine bourgeoisie – as well as the rest of Europe – was in continuous search of luxury and frivolous and ephemeral pleasures.
Who was Count Camillo Luigi Manfredo Maria Negroni, to whom was dedicated the famous cocktail
Among the Florentine aristocracy of the time, there was a nobleman originally from the town of Fiesole, Count Camillo Luigi Manfredo Maria Negroni. A rather bizarre and over the top character, he was known for his uncompromising temperament, lover of comforts, vices and travels. It is said that in his early twenties, he visited the United States wearing the clothes of a cowboy, and then moved to New York, giving himself to gambling. For a period he also lived in London.
How and when the Negroni was born
History is not able to determine the exact date, but tradition says that Count Camillo Negroni, between 1919 and 1920, used to go to the prestigious Casoni Grocery and Perfumery. Afterwards it became Caffè Giacosa. Located in the elegant Via de’ Tornabuoni, the café was one of the most sought-after meeting points of the Florentine aristocracy. Like any self-respecting era, even the 20’s had their own trendy aperitif, and at that time it was the so-called Americano. Perhaps tired of the usual drink, Count Negroni asked his friend and bartender, Fosco Scarselli, to change the original preparation of the Americano. The initial cocktail was made of a mix of vermouth, bitter and soda.
Count Negroni wanted something that would not alter the pleasant cardinal red of the original aperitif, but at the same time, would strengthen its alcoholic content. Probably fascinated by the discovery of gin he had tasted during his trip to London, he asked to add it to the traditional preparation of the American. Scarselli, substituted gin to soda, and instead of the traditional lemon peel, he preferred a slice of orange. The experiment was liked, so much that from that moment on, the new mix was called the Americano alla moda del Conte Negroni (American style of Count Negroni), and later on it simply became Negroni.
The Negroni cocktail in time
The escalation of Negroni has never stopped. Even the international cinema seems to notice the potentiality of the drink. Orson Welles himself, in 1947, had the opportunity to appreciate its intense uniqueness, during the shooting of the movie Cagliostro shot in Rome. He later declared: “Bitters are good for the liver, gin is bad for it. They balance each other”.
And what about the entrance of Negroni in the cinematographic saga of the most famous secret agent of history, 007? Well in the episode Risk, dated 1961, the perturbing James Bond then played by the timeless Roger Moore, orders his first Negroni.
In May 2019, the New York Times crowns the Negroni as the “perfect cocktail for 2019”.
Over time, several variations of the Negroni have sprung up. Just to name a few of the most popular, the Negroni sbagliato, in which the sparkling wine brut takes the place of gin, or the Negrosky, where the gin is replaced by vodka.
How Negroni is made
Arriving at this point, the question naturally comes up: how do we make a Negroni? Here you are now.
- 3 ml. of Gin
- 3 ml. of Bitter Campari
- 3 ml. of red Vermouth
- slice of orange
- some ice cubes
To make
Making Negroni cocktail is really simple, moreover it does not require any particular manual skills, or tools such as a shacker. The drink is made directly in the glass where it is served. In this case, the ideal glass to enjoy Negroni is the tumbler.
Take the tumbler and pour inside it and in order, Bitter Campari, Vermouth and Gin. At this point add ice cubes. This last expedient will prevent the contents from clouding up more than they should. Stir gently with a bar spoon and decorate with the orange slice. I recommend that you never, ever use a straw. The Negroni is drunk from the tumbler, under penalty of exile!
Where to taste the Negroni in Florence
There are many places in Florence where you can taste an excellent Negroni made to perfection. But you can’t pass through Florence without having tasted the Negroni made at Caffè Gilli, the historic bar in Piazza della Repubblica, in vogue since 1733.
