A proposito di San Valentino, sapevate che esiste una piccola frazione in Toscana dal nome San Valentino?

Questa graziosa località si trova nell’incontaminata e splendida Maremma grossetana, a breve distanza – circa 9 km. – dalla rinomata cittadina di Sorano. La frazione di San Valentino, nasce probabilmente nel Medioevo come villaggio rurale, e, deve il suo nome proprio al Santo in questione. A quest’ultimo è difatti dedicata la chiesa omonima del paese, risalente al XV secolo.

Le origini del raccolto borgo di San Valentino, sono molto remote. Si presume che la zona fosse già conosciuta ed abitata dagli etruschi; lo dimostrano infatti, i reperti rinvenuti risalenti al IV° e III° secolo a.C.

Se avrete occasione di trovarvi in zona, non perdete l’occasione di dedicare un visita alla piccola località e alla sua chiesa. Al suo interno ospita oltre un bel crocefisso ligneo del XVIII secolo, anche un fontebattesimale quattrocentesco, ed una acquasantiera risalente al Cinquecento.

Cosa vedere nelle vicinanze di San Valentino

Immergetevi nella rigogliosa natura circostante. Da segnalare nelle immediate vicinanze, la Rocca di Fregiano (Strada provinciale Casa Rocchi). Si tratta di una fortificazione medievale posta su uno sperone roccioso in tufo. Sebbene oggi si presenti pressoché sotto forma di rudere, è ancora visibile la pianta quadrangolare, ed alcune feritoie disposte a diverse altezze.

Utilizzate la località di San Valentino, come base di partenza per la visita della conosciuta area del Tufo, che comprende anche un’interessante serie di siti archeologici. Rimarrete affascinati e stupiti dai numerosi cunicoli scavati nel tufo che si intersecano tra loro, e dalle tombe di origine romana ed etrusca. Di particolare interesse, sono le due tombe monumentali a semi dado con facciate scolpita del III secolo a.C., poste in località Casa Rocchi.

Bisogna proprio ammetterlo: in Toscana abbiamo proprio tutto, anche la località di San Valentino!

About Valentine’s Day, did you know there is a small village in Tuscany called San Valentino?

This pretty village is located in the unspoilt and beautiful Maremma around Grosseto, a short distance – about 9 km. – from the famous town of Sorano. The hamlet of San Valentino was probably founded in the Middle Ages as a rural village and owes its name to the saint in question. The village’s church of the same name, dating back to the 15th century, is in fact dedicated to the Saint.

The origins of the village of San Valentino are very remote. It is assumed that the area was already known and inhabited by the Etruscans, as demonstrated by the findings dating back to the fourth and third centuries before Christ.

If you are around the area, do not miss the opportunity to visit the small village and its church. Inside the church there is a beautiful wooden crucifix of the eighteenth century, a baptismal font of the fifteenth century, and a stoup dating back to the sixteenth century.

What to see in the surroundings of San Valentino

Immerse yourself in the lush surrounding nature. To be mentioned in the immediate nearness, the Rocca di Fregiano (Strada provinciale Casa Rocchi). It is a medieval fortification placed on a rocky spur in tuff. Although today is present almost in the form of ruins, is still visible quadrangular plant, and some loopholes arranged at different heights.

Use the locality of San Valentino as a starting point to visit the well-known area of Tufa, which also includes an interesting series of archaeological sites. You will be fascinated and amazed by the several tunnels dug in the tuff that intersect each other, and the tombs of Roman and Etruscan origin. Of particular interest, are the two monumental tombs with sculpted facade of the third century BC, located in Casa Rocchi.

You have to admit it: in Tuscany we have everything, including the location of Valentine’s Day!
