Come? Allevando simpatici e dolci alpaca.

Alpaha Onlus Florence, a beating heart for a great project
I want to tell you about a beautiful Florentine project, the Alpaha Onlus. Its purpose is not for profit, but exclusively pursues the goal of a socially useful organisation. What particularly struck me is that this is an organisation that was born from nothing, which, thanks to the commitment and love of a mother for her child, is now helping several families facing the same kind of difficulties. Presenting this initiative, which also operates in our area, is a source of pride for me.
Alpaha Onlus is not a simple charity, but a real life project
Alpaha Onlus is a social promotion association – but I think it is more appropriate to call it a small happy oasis – made up of parents and operators, who together carry out a noble and complex cause. The intent is to create a work activity, able not only to include young people with intellectual and relational disabilities in society, but as far as possible, to make them autonomous and above all happy and fulfilled. How? By breeding cute and sweet alpacas.
The choice to raise alpacas rather than any other type of animal is obviously not random. Being particularly docile and easy to look after, as well as being friendly and curious, alpacas have all the essential requirements for living in close contact with humans. They are also very suitable as companions on organised trips and trekking tours.
Increasingly, alpacas are also involved in pet therapy, what in Italian we would call animal-assisted therapy. Scientific studies report that in the presence of pathologies of a physical, behavioural or mental nature, animal-assisted activities lead to an encouraging improvement in both the mood and the clinical state of patients.
Why Alpaha Onlus was born
The reason for creating an association of this kind is to be found within our social fabric. The society in which we live is increasingly frenetic, and this condition inevitably leads to the isolation of those who cannot keep up with certain standards. It goes without saying that in the presence of young people with disabilities, the gap widens.
The working world focuses its attention on those who can produce the most, disregarding the fact that anyone can contribute to the community, as long as they are put in a position to do so. Contrary to what some people wrongly think, young people with autism spectrum disorder and relational and intellectual disabilities are perfectly capable young people.
These cultural inattentions generate in both the young person and his or her family a strong sense of helplessness and frustration. Alpaha Onlus was founded exactly with the intention of offering the alternative that is missing.
Working on the basic issues listed, Barbara Vallotti, the project’s creator, has succeeded in giving voice to a problem that has been ignored for too long. I must admit that her tenacity and foresight proved to be successful.
Where Alpaha Onlus is located and what activities it carries out
Alpaha Onlus is located in Via Bassa, 2/13, 50100 Firenze FI, Italy inside a beautiful green area near the Animal Park of Ugnano (Firenze). The property, originally an old plant nursery that had been disused for years and totally in need of renovation, was granted to the association free of charge by the Municipality of Florence.
Numerous interventions were needed to reclaim the land, such as the installation of a coconut fibre pipe to filter rainwater. The work to be carried out has not discouraged the good intentions of our protagonists, and slowly but surely, results have not been slow to arrive.
Alpaha Onlus was inaugurated in 2018, after much work and effort between bureaucratic procedures and the search for subsidies. The project currently involves young people between the working ages of 18 and 30. All are followed by specialised educators financed by the Fondazione Ente Cassa Risparmio di Firenze.
Over the years, various organisations, from the Region of Tuscany to individual citizens, have taken an interest in the organisation. Part of the financial support comes from the commitment and activities carried out within the non-profit organisation, which involves the young people of the association, who are called upon to actively participate in the project.
Activities within Alpaha Onlus are fervent. In addition to maintaining a bioactive vegetable garden, the boys are personally involved in the alpaca breeding. They clean the stables, feed the animals and even take them out to graze. These tasks are extremely important for each of them, because it helps them to take responsibility, making them feel both useful and an integral part of the community, empathising with the environment and the people around them.
But that’s not everything! As the wool of the alpacas is very valuable, the animals are periodically sheared. The wool obtained is worked and processed by an external company, which then returns it to the association.
At this point, the guys, using small looms and other tools, transform the wool into pretty handicrafts, such as gadgets and simple items of clothing including scarves, neck warmers and more. All the creations will then be exhibited and sold at markets and festivals, and the proceeds re-invested in the association.
In these small works of art, there is all the love and commitment of these young people.
In order to stimulate and improve the quality of life of the guys, the Alpaha project also provides psychomotricity, music therapy and Augmentative Alternative Communication (W.O.C.E.) strategies.
Alpaha Onlus is generally not open to the public except for planned events and feasts, where it welcomes visitors by showing its activities and introducing the friendly alpacas. The rich calendar of events can be consulted both via their website and the dedicated Facebook page.
It really is true that love can overcome any limit. Barbara Vallotti and the Alpaha Onlus teach us that a strong motivation is able to break down any barrier.
